How to Read Spreads: One-Card, Three-Card, and Five-Card Layouts
A spread is the layout in which cards are placed. Each position has a role, so the same card reads differently depending on where it lands.
One card: today’s message
The simplest draw, suited to questions like “What do I need today?” Look at the picture and value your first impression.
Three cards: past, present, future
Handy for reading a flow. The first card shows the background, the second the present, and the third the likely direction. Read the three together as one story.
Five cards: situation, challenge, past factor, near future, outcome
Suited to complicated worries. You compare the situation with the challenge and look at both the underlying factor and the outcome if you continue as you are. The outcome card is not a fixed future but a forecast of “if things continue.”
Tips for reading
First, count how many cards are upright and reversed. Many reversed cards may mean it is time to pause and review. Next, look for similar pictures or repeated numbers. Finally, summarize the whole in one sentence.
